Holy Huddles: Part 1

Basic principle: LUKE. 12 : 1. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, ..."

The term 'Holy Huddle' is often used by Evangelists to exhort churches to a more mission-orientated point of view. However, holy huddle is perhaps a contradiction in terms, and therefore requires Biblical definition. So what is a holy huddle? How do we recognize one?

Read JUDE. : 20-23; JAS. 1 : 26-27; 2 COR. 6 : 14 - 7 : 1.
1. Do you think there is a need for personal and corporate holiness? What is the benefit of this individually, and to the church? Do you think the term 'Holy Huddle' describes this condition?

Read 1 PET. 4 : 8 - 9; 2 THESS. 1 : 3.
2. Suppose a few of you met at somebody's house for fellowship, cakes and a good chat. During the course of time you get to know each other better and begin to share yourselves. Do you think this kind of meeting has any advantages? If so, what are they? Has it any disadvantages?

Read 1 COR. 1 : 10 - 17.
3. Wrapped up in theology? The Corinthians loved to debate the latest Christian ideas, and listen to the most prominent speakers. So much so, that they were divided into groups, each of which hero-worshipped a different teacher. This kind of community without spirtuality would be disastrous. Why?

4. Read JAS. 1 : 22 - 25; MATT. 28 : 18 - 20; JOHN. 13 : 34.
Knowledge is very important, but how important is it to combine knowledge with faith? How important is it to combine knowledge and faith with love? Which of these three is the most important?

Holy Huddles: Part 2

Basic principle: LUKE. 12 : 1. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, ..."

Without love, there is a huddle. Without effective prayer, there is a huddle. Without seeking the giver as well as the gifts, there is a huddle. Without Holiness, there is a huddle. We are most effective when we are full of the Lord, but unless there is an effective structure for the release of gifts and ministries in the church, the result could be a huddle.

Read ACTS. 5 : 42; 2 THESS. 1 : 11; HEB. 13 : 17 - 21; 2 THESS. 3 : 6 - 7.
1. Leadership should present a vision to which the fellowship are committed (or can commit themselves to). A direction in which the fellowship is going that members of the body can fit into. Not just a loose set of individuals! What if people were not content to join in with, or relate to that vision? What effect could this have? Do you think it could cause problems? Do you think you should pray for your leaders if the vision is hazy?

Read ACTS. 6 : 1 - 7.
2. A vision for the church may be described as 'the way forward'. Sometimes the way we do things (the structure) does not always allow us to move forward as we hope to. (That is to say, that sometimes the structure 'clogs' the vision). If we were to notice this condition, what do you think ought to be done then?

Read TITUS. 3 : 1 -11; 1 COR. 13 : 1 - 3; PHIL. 2 : 1 - 4.
3. What do you understand by the term, 'a two speed church'? Suggest some of the ways that could lead to this condition.

Read ACTS. 2 : 1; ACTS. 2 : 42 - 47; ACTS. 9 : 31.
4. To avoid the pitfalls of a two speed church, there must be a blending together, and unity of the body. Is this possible to achieve unless personal revival is evident in the individual lives of the fellowship?

Holy Anger

Basic principle: JOHN. 2 : 17. "Zeal for your house will consume me."

The idea of being led to anger by the Holy Spirit of God may seem foreign to some minds. In fact, there are many instances in the Bible where this took place, usually (but not always) with a zeal for the purity of worship. Holy anger in you, is God's way of expressing His intense desire to see a situation change. When such anger is felt, most people react. So what is Holy anger?

Read ACTS. 5 : 1-4; ACTS. 8 : 18-23; 1 COR. 5 : 12-13; 1 COR. 11 : 17-22.
1. Are you ready to be consumed with zeal for the Lord's House? What would make you angry for the Lord's House?

Read ZECH. 1 : 14; 2 COR. 11 : 2.
2. What do you think the difference is between Holy anger and Holy jealousy?

Read LUKE. 13 : 14-17; ACTS. 7 : 51-53.
3. In the above two examples of scripture, Jesus and Paul were obviously angry; what do you think made them angry? Have you known the righteous anger of God to well up inside you?

Read ACTS. 16 : 16-18; 2 JOHN. : 9-11; 3 JOHN. : 9-11.
4. Is it our place to be angry with the Devil, and his works? If so, in what ways should we express this Holy anger?

Holy Boldness

Basic principle: JOHN. 2 : 7. Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water......"

Servants (or disciples) of Christ are to hear His voice, and do as He tells them, leaving the result up to Him. Obedience to His Word belongs to us. The results belong to God. It is up to us to fill the water jars - right to the brim. It is up to Christ to make the water into wine.

Read JOHN. 5 : 39-40; MATTHEW. 11 : 12
1. Does knowledge necessarily open the way to practical ministry by itself?

Read JOHN. 3 : 1-12; JOHN. 4 : 7-26; JOHN. 4 : 39-42.
2. Compare Nicodemus with the Samaritan woman. Who had the most knowledge? Who was bolder? Who (as far as we know) did the most good?

Read JOHN. 1 : 43-46.
3. Frequently, the most effective Christian is the believer who simply says to his friends, "I have found the saviour; come and see Him". Do you think this invitation was given through a friendly association, or did it require boldness as well? If so, why?

Read ACTS. 4 : 29-31.
4. What were the reasons that made the Apostles pray for boldness? Do you think that we should pray for boldness? If so, what would your reasons be for doing this?

Read ACTS. 9 : 10-17.
Ananias heard God's command, but it took boldness to carry it out. Sometimes it can be quite challenging to move forward in an act of faith, but when we do, the results can be quite dramatic.

Personal Evangelism

Basic principle: ROMANS. 6 : 23

Mankind is sinful, and that sin seperates him/them from a loving God. This means that man needs to turn to God. God wants people to turn to Him. His desire is that they should be under His Lordship, and not under the rule of this world. The only provision for man's sin, that God has made, is Jesus Christ. Therefore, we must turn from ourselves and receive Jesus Christ through faith. Once you yourself are saved, you become an instrument through whom God may work in order to save others,

Please read 1 TIM. 6 : 12; JOHN. 15 : 27; 2 THESS. 2 : 13-17.

1. What is our biggest asset as witnesses to Christ?

Please read 1 PET. 2 : 12; 2 TIM. 2 : 21; 2 COR. 5 : 15.

2. A good testimony about Christ rests on a good relationship with Him. How important do you think this is to effective witnessing for Christ?

Please read PHILEMON. : 6; 1 JOHN. 1 : 3; 1 TIM. 4 : 16; 2 PETER. 3 : 9; LUKE. 15 : 10.

3. When we share Christ with others, we will find that there are a number of benefits. What are:

  1. the benefits to you?
  2. the benefits to others?
  3. the benefits to God?

Please read 2 COR. 4 : 2; 1 COR. 1 : 31; 1 PETER. 3 : 15; COL. 4 : 6.

4. Is there a right or wrong way to share your faith?

Pray that God will give you opportunities to share Jesus.
